The Memotech MTX Series

CP/M Software - MTX User Club Germany

Library Structure

If you source MTX User Club Germany libraries from other locations, such as the gaby.de ftp site, they are more than likely to be in the original format produced by the User Club, i.e., library (.LBR) files. The instructions on the first disk in the library, "Club.000", gives the instructions for expanding these libraries.

Obviously, the comments in the individual archives are in German! Unfortunately, but again, it's not surprising, that the text files were written using the special German characters such as A, E and O with umlauts (  ¨ ) and the eszett ( ß ) character. On my PC, these characters are not present in the default font set, giving Google Translate some difficultly in translating the content of the text files but it's possible to work out most of the important information.

So, with help from Google Translate, here are the main points from the comments file in the first disk in the library - this disk contains a number of compression and library utilities that are needed to work with files in the rest of the library and library files containing a list of the files on the individual disks. Hopefully, I have put the sense of the document into English - if you speak German and I have mangled the meaning too badly, please let me know!

Most of the disks in the library have a Table of Contents file in the form -source.xxx where "source" is one of the names shown below and "xxx" is the disk number.

(Note : This page was written before I started using Word to replace the German characters that were not displayed properly on a UK PC, the "translated" text files on the main MTX User Club Germany page are probably more accurate)

Included on this disc are the following libraries:

These files are all LZH-crunched, so that the contents fitb onto a Type 03 Floppy disk.

Explanation

The names of the LIBRARIES are derived from the name of the Table of Contents Files on the disks. I have removed  the dash from the beginning of Table of Contents File to avoid confusion between these and the library.

The reason to put the contents of the disks in libraries is quite simply the fact, that a Type 03 format a disk only has 64 Directory entries, but the MTX user-Club Germany has significantly more PD's on offer. Sure, I could simply put the PD table of contents files one after the other in one (or more) large files, but finding anything in such a large file would be difficult and due to its size, working with only one Type 03 Drive is not feasible. So compression is required.

In the current version of the Library, the Tables of Contents files are packed into libraries which are then "crunched" (compressed) into LZH files.

Original:-XXXXXX.nnn  example -CLUB.002
In Library XXXXXX.LBR i.e. CLUB.LBR
Compressed: XXXXXX.LYR i.e. CLUB.LYR

Now to UNCR.COM:

UCRL.COM Expander = UNCRUNCH

Input : UCRL A:XXXX.LYR B: Result : XXXX.LYR expanded from A: to B: XXXX.LBR
Input : UCRL A:*.* B: Result : all *.?Y? A: and sets the result to B:

With only a single drive, the files must be split with UCRL on a twin drive system to be made useable

Now to NULU.COM:

NULU.COM Library Manager

Input : Result :
NULU NULU Output
-O XXXXXX Opens Library XXXXXX.LBR
-U user: user: = Disk/User, e.g., F0:
-E *.* Get everything
-X Exit

Example: two drives: B: with this disk, C: with SPACE!
A> c:
C> nulu
  NULU
  COPYRIGHT 1984
  SYSTEM SOLUTIONS
  TYPE M FOR MENU

  C0 AWAITING COMMAND:>-o b:club
  Library B0:CLUB.LBR open.
  Buffer size: 253 sectors
  Active entries: 38, Deleted: 0, Free: 26, Total: 64.
  AWAITING COMMAND C0:>-e *.001
  Extracting...
  -CLUB .001 to C0:-CLUB .001
   -EXTRACT MEMBERS A0:>

Hopefully, that gives you enough information to start working with the libraries, for the reasons described above, the contents are difficult to translate into English. A number of the original archives are stored on the gaby.de ftp site.
