The Memotech MTX Series

Martin Allcorn's Games ROM

MAGROM

Availability - Additional PCBs have arrived - do you want one?

Seeing what a great and inexpensive add-on for the MTX that MAGROM was, I expected that others might be interested in getting one too, so, having got a few notes of interest on Memorum, I had a limited number of PCBs manufactured by iteadstudio in China. My original intention was just to make the PCB, and possibly right angled MTX edge connectors, available to others. However, it soon became clear that most prospective users didn't have the time, inclination, confidence or skills (delete as appropriate!) to assemble their own boards. Martin kindly completed assembly of the remaining MAGROM PCBs and these were made available for purchase, first through the forum, and then on ebay, in March 2014.

To give maximum flexibility, the MAGROM board can be fitted to either the internal or external MTX bus connectors, in a similar way that Andy has done with his MTX Memory Card. To support this, Martin added the ability to bypass MAGROM when resetting the MTX - this allows the board to be left connected when not being used, even when mounted externally, this feature will save wear & tear on the edge connector - they are not meant for frequent connect/disconnect operations. The table shows the first run of MAGROM boards and the connector configuration.

As I said, my initial order for PCBs was very small (10) and, once they were available fully assembled, the first batch quickly sold out. Although the MTX was never a mainstream home computer, and the potential market for add-ons such as MAGROM is tiny compared to, say, the BBC micro, I thought that there may be enough interest to justify a second batch of boards.

Most of the second run of MAGROMs went to acquaintances or were advertised on ebay, where they again sold out pretty quickly, but I thought that the "market" had pretty much been satisfied by then. Nonetheless, I had what I expected to be a final run of boards produced and posted them on ebay.

Final (?) Production Run (August 2014)

We have done a third, and probably final, run of MAGROMs

- as before, assembled by Martin.
