Introduction

The media used in CFX/CFX-II mimics the disk formats used in the original SDX system and is not directly compatible with the formats that a PC uses for removable media, e.g., FAT-32. If you only want to use CFX with the supplied media and/or only use the MTX to read/write the media, then this isn't a problem. However, if you want to exchange files with a PC, perhaps to load additional games, then some work-arounds are needed.

For general guidance on how to exchange files with a PC, see my Technical Note on Transferring Files Between Memotech Disks and PC.

Martin has written a small utility for CFX-II that can directly transfer files from FAT formatted media to Memotech formatted media. This utility requires a double slot CF card adapter plugged into CFX-II, the first slot should hold the CFX boot card and the second slot can hold a FAT-32 formatted card. The utility program is written in BBC BASIC and with the I/O speed of the MTX, is not the fastest tool in the world, but does provide a convenient way to transfer the odd file or two between the PC and MTX or vice-versa.

Requirements

  • CFX-II (80 column video required)

  • Dual Slot CF Adapter

  • FAT Formatted media (in addition to CFX boot media)

  • BBCBASIC.COM

  • FAT32H.BBC

With a copy of the BBCBASIC executable and a copy of the program on the first CFX partition, enter :-

B> bbcbasic fat32h.bbc
